Though last month’s outing to Jamestown was cancelled due to bad weather. Members of Mpumalanga Heritage will now be visiting this lost mining settlement on the banks of the Noordkaap River, on Saturday 10 June.
All are welcome to join. The group will leave at 07:00 from the parking area in front of the Kruger Lowveld Tourism Info office (note that this has now been demolished but nevertheless we will meet at the same place). We will turn into the conservancy at a gate to the south of the road 500 metres up the road from the entrance to the Barberton Nature Reserve.
The initial alluvial diggings at Jamestown were the first mining operations in the De Kaap Valley. Though not much of the old mining camp is still visible the scars left by years of mining activities are and a rich history remains to be seen.
Only high clearance vehicles are advised. Bring a picnic lunch. Lunch near the Noord Kaap River will mark the end of the outing. There will be short walks away from the vehicles through the bush. For more information contact Duncan Ballantyne at duncan.ballantyne@sappi.com or on 082 329 7105,
