WFH Pocock bought the house Carisbrooke in St James and later built two smaller ones behind it. He lived there for many years and was Mayor of Kalk Bay – Muizenberg Municipality in 1897-98 and 1910-11, and City Councilor 1913 - 1916. He came from a long line of professional pharmacists and had a successful business that later became Heynes Mathew Ltd. He pioneered X-ray work, and was a leading photographer.

Grave Matters: Holy Trinity Graveyard Tells Some Stories

The Holy Trinity Church graveyard was used for burials between 1874 and 1903 – when the KB-M Municipality closed all local graveyards for health reasons and space limitations. Thereafter most Anglican burials took place at the Muizenberg Cemetery on Prince George Drive. Tombstones and burial registers provide the names of those buried in the churchyard.

Steve Herbert investigates several burial sites used in our area and recounts stories of some individuals and families buried at Holy Trinity.

The Life and Work of Sophia Gray

Bishop Robert Gray (1809 – 1872) was the first Anglican Bishop of Cape Town and his work in establishing and expanding Anglicism in southern Africa, and his associations with Kalk Bay, are well-known. He and his wife Sophia (b. Myddleton) (1814 – 1871) arrived in Cape Town in 1848. Sophy was an accomplished watercolourist, horsewoman, mother, social worker and secretary. She is regarded as South Africa's first female architect and was responsible for the design and construction of some 58 churches. She and Robert are buried side by side at St Saviour's Church, Claremont.

Rosalind Spears enjoys researching and writing biographies of famous women and will present an illustrated talk, with music, on Sophy Gray.
