Come along with me on a journey to explore what was once a vibrant, racially mixed suburb - Sophiatown. Although overcrowded and poor, with gangsters wandering the alleyways, music giants like Hugh Msekela, Dolly Rathebe and Miriam Makeba performed in Sophiatown. Father Trevor Huddleston lost his heart to the suburb, and longed to return to Sophiatown, while artist Gerard Sekoto painted his famous Yellow Houses in the suburb, the first artwork by a black artist to be bought by the Joburg Art Gallery.
But in 1955 the apartheid government started removing people to faraway suburbs, and then systematically demolished homes, street by street, leaving only 4 buildings standing. We will visit 3 of these buildings, and relive some of this history through music, prose and poetry.
Let's meet and take in another aspect of Joburg's intriguing history, in this drive-around tour.
