Wear comfortable clothes and shoes and a hat if need be. The tour is free – no cost so come and learn something about the area you live in.
Travel in your own vehicle (we will try to fill vehicles to keep the length of the group manageable) out towards the Wasbank Valley. En route stops to visit memorials you didn’t know existed, hear the stories of the Voortrekkers and their way up Endumeni mountain, how the Biggarsberg mountains got their name, the story of the Wasbank valley. Stop at the Wasbank river to view the stones where the Voortrekkers washed their clothes (hence the name of the river) and other stories in the area. Travel via the village of Wasbank, Telapi to Maria Ratschitz. This magnificent site at the base of Hlatikulu mountain has an amazing history and story. The only church that had the Bible verses originally painted in Zulu on the walls. Admire the superb stained glass windows, carvings and walk in the peaceful grounds.
From here we will return to Dundee via Glenluce pass and hear the stories of By products and the fascinating accounts of Lootjie de Jager and Karel Landman who lived and farmed in this valley.
Your guide for the day will be Pam McFadden, who has spent a life time collecting the stories of this area, both the written and the local reminiscences of the local people.
