Nelson Mandela Champion Tree Blue Plaque Design - City of Joburg

“It is time for us to restore to nature that which we had taken from it”. Nelson Mandela.

This tree, a Celtis Afrcanus known colloquially as stinkwood, was planted in Thokoza Park by former President Nelson Rohihlahla ‘Madiba’ Mandela on 4 September 2008, to commemorate his 90th birthday and to mark Arbor day in Soweto. In April 2017, the Nelson Mandela Champion Tree was provisionally declared as a Provincial Heritage resource of the Gauteng Province.

Unveiled at Thokoza Park on 17 July 2017 By Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo and the Nelson Mandela Foundation
