Starting in 1954, Dorkay House became a haven for black performers and musicians, at a time when racial exclusion was the order of the day. This was the home of the Union of South African Artists, dedicated to protecting the rights of performers. A thriving centre of music and drama, Dorkay house produced King Kong and other hit shows. The Sunday jazz sessions were legendary, and a host of great musicians graduated from here.
