We (ILKA) are very sad to report that the landmark Kensington heritage site, the Scottish Horse Memorial on Caledonia Hill has been vandalised. Click here to read about the history of the memorial. A big hole has been smashed out of the cross. A group of concerned residents has decided it's time to take action and take back our koppie, as we are busy doing with Rhodes Park.
Residents are invited to show up in numbers on Sunday morning, 7th May, at 9 am for a walk up the koppie, and to put our heads together to prevent this from happening again. We will meet at the bottom of the steps on Highland Rd between Good Hope and Katoomba Sts. As a concerned resident stated "We should encourage ongoing, regular use of the koppie - picnics, walks, clean-ups, sunset drinks, drumming sessions, children's hikes, painting classes etc .... the normal things, that normal people do, in normal societies with spaces like this..." If you've never been up the ridge, now's your time to do so and enjoy magnificent views over Johannesburg and Kensington and surrounding hills.
