The horizons in our suburbs are changing with minarets rising above the trees. Some are most imposing creating a new entrance to the inner City while others nestle amongst the local communities they serve. At the turn of the Twentieth Century it was the church steeples which indicated the expansion of the suburbs. Now the Mosques enrich the cultural life of the City indicating changes in demographics and the fading away of apartheid. The new buildings refer to the heritage of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and India.
This is a very exciting development which we explore, going inside several mosques and passing others on the way. Starting with the Grand Jaame Mosque in Houghton, visiting the mosque in Ormonde and ending with the Kerk Street Mosque.
