The Illustrated History of Hartbeespoort Dam has been published to mark the centenary of the completion of the dam wall in 1923. It is a story of vision, perseverance, and national pride, but it is also one of shameful racism and environmental ignorance.
Author, Vincent Carruthers, has written a number of books and articles about the history and landscape of the Magaliesberg region and he was instrumental in having the area proclaimed a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2015.
In his talk at the book launch he will describe some of the less-known facts about the dam, the problems it confronts, and the rich heritage of the catchment area that feeds it.
