Living in Australia for the last 12 years, I have become very conscious of 'ANZAC DAY' commemorating the Military Services provided by Aussie and New Zealand men in the military, naval and air force over many military conflicts including 2 World Wars.
Now on the East Rand between Benoni and Brakpan, there are (I should say were) two railway halts named 'New Kleinfontein' and 'ANZAC'.
I am curious, how did 'ANZAC' get its name? I am aware of an Aussie woman who emigrated to South Africa around the turn of the century and influenced the naming of two suburban stations between Johannesburg and Germiston - 'Cleveland' and 'Tooronga'. But I have no evidence that she also had her hand in naming 'ANZAC'.
Would anyone from the community be able to advise how 'ANZAC' came to be so-named?
