Every year, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) proposes a theme for International Museum Day. The theme for 2017 is “Museums and contested histories: saying the unspeakable in museums”. ICOM has further stated that “[b]y focusing on the role of museums as hubs for promoting peaceful relationships between people, this theme highlights how the acceptance of a contested history is the first step in envisioning a shared future under the banner of reconciliation”. Based on this year’s theme, museums are requested to showcase artefacts which will provoke thought and stimulate debate among communities.
