The trophy (Herbert Prins award) went to Kate Otten architects for the transformation of the Wits Planetarium into a multimedia, multifunctional space servicing the sports centre but retaining the great P dome. Now called the Anglo American Digital Dome, it opens in Feb to public but if you can get an early viewing grab the chance.

Wits university also received special certificate for its enabling of so many heritage projects. For example, the fantastic conversion of the old Flower Hall into a much more useable 3 level space for exams etc. but preserving the innovative Ove Arup engineering feat of the canopy like roof done in the 60s.

This time there were so many great entries to the competition and stretched to Pretoria too (click here to see all the entries). Dodd and Savage work at upgrading and conserving Cresthill as social housing in Hillbrow (originally a Harold le Roith building) was recognized.

Brendan and Yasmin excellent upgrading of the Mendi Memorial at the Avalon cemetery was praised.
