The June 2016 edition of the Johannesburg Collectable Book fair will be held this Saturday (the 11th) at 24 Lystanwold Road, Saxonwold between 9.00-1.00pm. There will be eight dealers exhibiting a variety of collectables, from First Editions; Rare Books; Africana; Antique Maps; to Share Certificates.
There will be three talks, from 10.30am.
1: Heritage Storytelling in the Digital Age, or how the art of Storytelling has now taken to digital platforms.
The speaker, Peter Delmar, is a published author, journalist and proprietor of Parkview Press, the boutique publishing house. As a speaker he is known for his hard-to-believe anecdotes from South Africa's past, many of which speak to the present.
2: (Approximate time 11:15) The interaction between African children and “outsiders”. The speaker, Johannes Malherbe (Ph.D), author of
‘Saved by the Lion?’ –Stories of African children encountering outsiders’, will share stories of African children highlighting the work of “saviours” from abroad . He assumes that most of the good stories have been told, and therefore focuses on stories of pain and suffering, reminding us of the joys and beauty of childhood, but also of vulnerabilities and the need to tread cautiously.
3. (Approximate time 12:00) The speaker, John Matisonn, fresh from the Franschhoek Literary Festival will be speaking on his new book; ‘God, Spies and Lies: How journalists, spooks and politicians shaped South Africa.’ While confirmation that the charismatic and influential former Sunday Times editor, Tertius Myburgh, was a voluntary spy for the apartheid government is one of the more sensational revelations in veteran journalist and editor John Matisonn's just-published book, the work is also a detailed and unflinching examination of the symbiotic relationship between business, journalism and politics.
