In response to a need for reliable academic research on a range of heritage issues, the National Heritage Council (NHC) and the University of South Africa (UNISA) is calling for applications for studentship programme. The purpose of the Studentship Programme is to enable students to study master’s and PhD programmes in archives and heritage programmes at UNISA on the research work that they will conduct at the NHC, while also working there as interns.

The programme intends to develop emerging labour entrants with skills and experience to function in a working environment. Through the studentship programme the students will be exposed to on-the-job training which will be properly coordinated in order to achieve the objectives of the programme during the duration of the internship.

The students are anticipated to  start from 1 July 2022 to 31 March 2024. The shortlisted students will go through a formal interview process. The outcome of the interview will be communicated directly with the applicants.

Interested potential students should prepare a proposal of less than 600 words in any of the following areas: Resistance Liberation Heritage Route unit, Heritage, and Living Heritage. Preference will be given to students who are researching niche areas related to cultural organisations, archives, heritage, oral history, archaeology, and anthropology. From the given topics, the student should develop the title, introduction, problem statement (one sentence), purpose and objectives, as well as diagram representation of the methodology to be applied.

• Notification of acceptance of abstracts: 20 May 2022

NB. Preference will be given to students in Archives and Records Management, Heritage, Archaeology, Anthropology, and History. Students should be qualifying to study either masters or doctoral qualifications in the identified areas as per the University of South Africa’s admission requirements.
