Bernard Kachama Mbenga is Professor of History at the North-West University (NWU), Mafikeng Campus where he has lectured and researched continuously since September 1987. He formally retired from NWU in December 2017. He was then immediately re-appointed as Extraordinary Professor up to December 2021. He is supervising three postgraduate students as well as writing three books on various aspects Batswana societies. He has BA.Ed double major in History and English from the University of Zambia in Lusaka obtained in July 1980, and an MA in Southern African Studies from the University of York’s Centre for Southern African Studies, in England, obtained in July 1985, having studied for both degrees full-time. He also has a D.Litt. et Phil. from the University of South Africa in Pretoria on the history of the Bakgatla ba Kgafela of the Pilanesberg region, obtained in March 1997. His research interests are 19th and early 20th century Western Transvaal; missionaries and African chiefs; land-purchasing by Africans in the former Western Transvaal; and the role of Africans in the South African War of 1899 – 1902.
 
He is the co-author and co-editor (with Hermann Giliomee) of New History of South Africa (Tafelberg: Cape Town, November 2007). He has jointly (with Andrew Manson) authored “People of the Dew”: The Bafokeng of the Phokeng-Rustenburg District of South Africa, from Early Times to 2000, (Jacana Media: Johannesburg, 2010). He has also co-authored and co-edited (with Carolyn Hamilton and Robert Ross), The Cambridge History of South Africa, Vol. I, From Early Times to 1885 (Cambridge University Press: London, 2010). He is the co-author (with Prof Andrew Manson) of Land, Chiefs, Mining: South Africa’s North West Province Since 1840 (Wits University Press: Johannesburg, 2014); A Short History of the ANC in North West Province of South Africa, 2009 – 2012 (Unisa Press: Pretoria, 2016). He has published articles on various aspects of Batswana history in academic journals, including the Journal of Southern Africa Studies, African Historical Review and the South African Historical Journal. He is on the editorial boards of three History journals, the e-journal, History Compass, and Yesterday and Today, the last two based on the Vaal Campus of North West University. He is a past member of the editorial board of the prestigious Journal of African History (2002 – 2007) (published by Cambridge University Press, England), and the South African Historical Journal (1999 – 2009). He is a National Research Foundation (NRF) Rated scholar and is still actively researching and publishing.
