Let's look at a time when Joburg was at war with the government of Jan Smuts. Come along on my Fietas to Fordsburg tour next Saturday, and learn about how bombs were dropped on miners in the 1922 Miners Strike, culminating in the final battle in Fordsburg. Learn about activist Adam Asvat, whose family was removed from Sophiatown and relocated to Fietas (Pageview), and how he fought the apartheid monster to keep his house in Fietas, which still stands, when the government moved to Fietas in its removal drive.
Two weeks ago a visitor from Hermanus asked me to do this tour, and the two of us moved from Fietas to Fordsburg, and happily walked around Fordsburg, taking in the vibe and the history of one of the oldest suburbs in the city.
