The National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC) calls for nomination of the 2022/23 Golden Shield Heritage Awards, which intend to celebrate and appreciate our country’s rich and diverse heritage, while recognising those who preserve and promote it. The closing date for submission of nominations is on 10th of November 2022.

These awards recognises the work of individuals, organisations and academic institutions that reflect best practices in promoting, preserving, conserving and/or interpreting such heritage for the broader society’s awareness and appreciation. 

The national Golden Shield Heritage Awards were conceived 10 years ago derived from an observation through seminars, lectures and conferences revealing that there was a gap in the recognition of initiatives, innovation and excellence in the heritage and culture space. The awards are seen as an intervention in nation building and transformation of heritage enabling South African publics to celebrate and cherish their heritage while being recognised and appreciated. The awards are also motivated by the rationale that heritage plays a significant role in promoting social cohesion and community development.

The GOSHA awards are in their third year running in partnership with the host province of Limpopo through the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.

The categories for this year’s awards are as follows: National Living Treasure; Local Government Commitment; Preferred Heritage Destination; Young Heritage Activist; Voice of Heritage; Heritage Journalism; Corporate Heritage Management; Liberation Heritage Steward; Heritage Education and Heritage Social Media Influencer.

“I encourage all South African Heritage activists, managers and community members to submit their entries or nominate others for recognition and new opportunities in the Heritage sector. It is also necessary for the entity to show gratitude and take pride in the people who continuously contribute selflessly to South Africa’s rich cultural heritage” says Dr Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni, Chief Executive of the NHC.
