There was an incident in Table Bay on board a schooner that was alongside the schooner Lucy when she was there in 1864. A black bear escaped from its cage on the deck, and mauled a child to death. The source of the story is well deceased now, but he was a young boy on board the Lucy at the time, and his memory was excellent. Could anyone advise how I could possible corroborate this story? I have looked at some South African newspapers for the period with no luck yet.
Thank you in advance.
