The Iron Age east of the Drakensberg and south of the Phongolo River dates from AD 440 to the onset of the colonial period at, say, AD 1820. In this talk Gavin compares two parts of the sequence which differ quite dramatically from one another in terms of homesteads sites and kinds of artefacts. He shows how these differences relate to marriage arrangements and to political organization. Gavin also covers some results from recent excavations at the site Ntshekane near Muden.
