The next talk will take place on Tuesday the 25th of October. It covers the Art Nouveau designs of hotels in central Cape Town from 1890 – 1911, prior to the Art Deco era of high rise buildings which replaced many of these pleasing designs. Only four hotels out of a total of sixty remain. The talk describes 24 hotels and their architects and is illustrated with the original architectural drawings which were sourced at the Western Cape Archives with the permission of the City Council.

This is a story long forgotten and seldom told which reminds us of the many attractive hotels that graced our streets during the 19th and 20th centuries. All of this material is presented in an attractive A4 book priced at R200 (retail price R380), copies of which will be available at the talk. You can read a review of this book here.

Also on sale will be your Association’s newly published Bulletin 19. This covers the talks: The Importance of Stone and its Relevance Today – case study of Muizenberg – Kalk Bay by Tony Kiley; The Story of Silvermine Valley and Farms by Derek Stuart Findlay. Steve Herbert gave two talks covering the Social and Architectural History of the Quarterdeck Estate Area. These have been combined into Bulletin 19. Illustrated with over 100 pictures, maps and diagrams – this detailed look at the history of the area is a must for anyone interested in local history.
