An internship is available for a student in economics, tourism management or heritage studies. The project is to undertake a feasibility study into the possible re-use of heritage buildings, constructed by the ‘Nederlands-Zuid Afrikaanse Spoorwermaatschaapij’ (Netherlands South African Railways Company) that operated in the area of the former Transvaal between 1877-1900.
The internship can be carried out over either 4 or 6 months on a remunerated part-time basis.
The intern will be required to:
- Identify 2 possible sites, originally constructed for the NZASM that show potential for economically feasible re-use with the possiblity of local economic beneficiation.
- Identify the owner and stakeholders of the three identified sites.
- Develop for each site:
- A development vision
- An action plan
- Feasibility study
- Financing model including possible investors and identification of partners.
To be delivered as a single report.
The successful candidate will be:
- By preference be a masters student in economy or tourism management.
- Have interest in local economic beneficiation / tourism economics or heritage and development.
- Be an independent worker
- Have a reliable internet connection
- Be mobile, either by public transport or an own vehicle
The internship can be linked to an academic thesis at a South African university.
