Come with me on the trail of old trees in Emmarentia and Parkview, and a tree planted in the 1890s to mark the road to Rustenburg. Step back into Joburg of 100 or so years ago, as we trace the city's history through its trees, and learn about the early pioneers who transformed this tree-less landscape after 1886, when gold was discovered here. We'll start in our cars, but then drive to Emmarentia, where we'll park, and take a walk of 6.5km to Zoo Lake and back, after a look into an old graveyard. Some of those early pioneers will be pleased to know the trees they planted all those years ago, are still thriving.
