Members of the KZN Archaeological Society will be familiar with the beautiful rock art made in the sandstone overhangs of the Drakensberg and associated areas. Zimbabwe's hunter-gatherer rock art –made on granite, not sandstone – is every bit as spectacular and numerous. According to one researcher there may be as many as 10 000 rock art sites in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwean art can be regarded as part of the same general southern African hunter-gatherer tradition as the Drakensberg paintings, but seems to be older. The Zimbabwean paintings have a distinctive set of styles and themes that include a wide variety of animals, paintings of trees, fruits and bulbs, and the mysterious and ubiquitous 'formlings'. Jeremy will share images from a recent visit to many of the biggest and best preserved rock art sites in different parts of Zimbabwe.
Happening on Saturday, June 9th at 10:30 at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, 237 Jabu Ndlovu Street, Pietermaritzburg (click here to view map)
