The month of May in Potchefstroom is synonymous with the yearly Art and Antique Market at the President Pretorius Museum (Thabo Mbeki Avenue – across from Mooirivier Primary School). This year the market will be on Saturday, 5 May 2018 from 09:00 to 16:00.
The popular market is the ideal place to come and browse for articles from days gone by. The market is especially sought after by collectors of old books, porcelain, antique furniture, toys, household wares and much more. In previous years the day of the Antiekmark was a balmy autumn day with just enough sunshine to make a perfect day.
Everybody is welcome at the Antiekmark. Come drink a cup of filter coffee and eat some freshly baked bread and other delectable treats. And just enjoy the day under oak trees that were planted by the president himself.
The President Pretorius Museum was the house of Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, the first president of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek and founder of Pretoria. He lived on the farm between 1868 and 1893 and built the house, smithy, coach-house and stable himself. As the oldest son of the well-known Voortrekker leader, Andries Pretorius, he took part in the Battle of Bloedrivier on 16 December 1838. He died on 19 May 1901, when as an 81 year old, British soldiers took him into custody for questioning outside during a bitter cold winter’s night and he fell ill afterwards.
