Siege of Elands River Blue Plaque - Magaliesberg Heritage

The British supply depot at Elands River (today Swartruggens) was besieged by General Koos de la Rey’s Boers from the commandos of Rustenburg, Lichtenburg, Wolmaranstad, Bloemhof, Marico, Griqualand and Vryburg. The British garrison of 505 Australians and Rhodesians as well as wagon drivers under Colonel Charles Hore, defended more than 100 wagons packed with large quantities of supplies. Heavy artillery and rifle fire from the Boers forced the defenders to rapidly dig trenches. The Australians and Rhodesians refused to surrender and held out until relieved by Lord Kitchener on 16 August.
