[Tour cancelled] Esselen Park is a Provincial Heritage Site, and today houses Transnet’s School of Rail and a technical and management training centre for the South African railways. The neo-classical campus was built in Kempton Park during World War Two, and Italian prisoners of war worked on the project for a time. It soon became known as the "University of the Veld".
Our tour encompasses the history of railways in South Africa, and explores the original Park Station Canopy which used to preside over Platforms, 3, 4 and 5 of the Johannesburg Railway Station...
