On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela WiSER and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation invite you to a screening of The State against Mandela and the Others, a film by Nicolas Champeaux and Gilles Porte. A debate will follow the screening.
Nelson Mandela seized centre stage during a historic trial in 1963 and 1964. There were eight others who, like him, faced the death sentence. They too were subjected to pitiless cross-examinations. They stood firm and turned the table on the state: South Africa’s Apartheid regime was in the dock. The trial was recorded on an analogue audio recording system called dictabelts. This film is based on the sound archives from the trial. Starring in the film are the former accused Denis Goldberg, Ahmed Kathrada, Andrew Mlangeni, the lawyers George Bizos and Joel Joffe, with contributions from Winnie Mandela, Sylvia Neame, Max Sisulu, Toni Strasburg and David Yutar. The music is composed by Aurelien Chouzenoux.
