For the next Culture Connect Conversation, the well-published and highly acclaimed archaeologist, Dr Janette Deacon, will give an illustrated talk about rock art, before an informal discussion over wine and snacks.
Janette is invited all over the world to discuss South African rock art, its management and its relationship to both archival sources and archaeology. She has contributed significantly to the Bleek and Lloyd archive at UCT, recognised by the United Nations as a site of the Memory of the World (she convened the first conference around the Bleek and Lloyd Collection in 1991). She has helped shape legislation protecting the San’s visual heritage and archaeology. Despite being retired and an active grandparent, Janette is still actively leading eCRAG, the eastern Cederberg Rock Art Group, which she co-founded in 2007.
“Theory is part of the romance of archaeology and is vital if we want to breathe some life into the snippets of information drawn from stone and other artefacts” says Janette, come and find out more.
