Paul Mikula has been awarded the prestigious Gold Medal of the Heritage Association of South Africa (HASA) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to preserving South Africa's cultural heritage. His work spans multiple domains including traditional art, music, and architecture, with a particular focus on ensuring that indigenous knowledge systems and cultural artifacts are preserved for future generations through education, research, and detailed study.

The Gold Medal, formerly known as the Simon Van der Stel Gold Medal until its renaming in 2024, represents HASA's highest honor. This prestigious award is bestowed annually by the National Council of the Heritage Association of South Africa to recognise individuals and organisations who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to conserving South Africa's heritage resources.

The selection process involves nominations from HASA-affiliated societies and members of the public, with final decisions made by a distinguished panel of heritage and conservation experts. Recipients are chosen based on their exemplary efforts to encourage communities to preserve and nurture their cultural legacy for future generations, aligned with the principles outlined in the National Heritage Resources Act.

Paul Mikula was recognised for his comprehensive work in preserving traditional art, music, and architecture, as well as his contributions to heritage education and research.

Professor Rodney Moffett was also honoured for his significant contributions to botany and environmental heritage.

The dual presentation of Gold Medals, while not unprecedented, is notable, as HASA typically awards one or two medals annually to maintain the award's prestige and significance in the heritage conservation community.

The Heritage Association of South Africa continues to play a vital role in recognising and promoting excellence in heritage conservation across the country.
