Orlando High School (Soweto's First High School) was established in 1939. lt was started at the Orlando Communal Hall (the first community hall in Soweto). Mr Nakeni was the first principal. The school is affectionately known as the 'Rock of Old Ages' because it is built on a rocky site.
Orlando High School has produced many prominent personalities who have played significant roles in our society. Alumini include President Kgalema Motlanthe, Rev Frank Chikane, Arch Bishop Stanley Mokgoba, Judge Mosala, Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng, Mr Wellington Tshazibane, General Siphiwe Nyanda, Mr Billy Masethla, Mr Joe Thloloe, Mr Kaizer Motaung, Dr irvin Khoza, Mr Ephraim Jomo Sono, Mr Ephraim Shakes Mashaba, Dr Thami Mazwai, Dr Brian Thlabe, Mr Chico Thwala, Dr Ekzo Nkosi, Miss Nomsa Nene, Dr M W Khambule, Prof Ezekiel Mphahlele, Mr Zeph Mothopeng and Mr Digit "ABC" Motsepe (father of First Lady Dr Tshepo Motsepo and businessman Patrice Motsepe).
A Blue Heritage Plaque will be unveiled on 24 September 2019 as will an Honours Board capturing the names of famous alumini such as those mentioned above.
