We are partnering with Lynne Maree, 26 11th Avenue Melville, for Gardens of the Golden City.
Melville Koppies isn’t a manicured garden. It is a natural heritage treasure in stark contrast to the surrounding gardens. As conservationists of this special space, we do not water, plant, mow, fertilize or use pesticides. Instead we remove alien vegetation which allows the indigenous diverse vegetation to flourish. We burn the grasslands as necessary to remove moribund material. This gives pre-rain flora air and sunlight to put on a spring show. The rugged 3 billion-year old quartzite ridges provide a powerful backdrop for the forested areas and grasslands. In addition, the Koppies have carefully preserved evidence of people who once lived here. The 500 year-old iron smelting furnace led to the heritage status of the Koppies.
A section of the Koppies will be open for people to do a self-guided circular walk, or a walk to the top contour with panoramic views, or a visit to the archaeological site at the Lecture Hut, OR ALL THREE OPTIONS.
Please note that the main entrance at Judith Road will be closed on Sunday 30th October.
