We (Kalk Bay Historical Association) have a talk lined up for the 27th March which many of you will find extremely interesting – a vital part of Cape Town’s and our own local history. The talk will be preceded by the brief formalities of our Annual General Meeting.
TALK: Grave Encounters
DATE: Tuesday 27th March at 8 pm
VENUE: Community Centre, 180 Main Road Kalk Bay
SPEAKER: Tim Hart
Tim Hart is a co-author, with Antonia Malan, David Halkett and Liesbet Schietecatte, of the recently published book ‘Grave Encounters’ which describes the archaeology of the Green Point burial grounds. In this illustrated talk he will take us back into 18th - 19th century Cape Town to explain the origins, discovery, and significance of the burial grounds, and their current preservation – and reflect on the importance of the surviving burial grounds of Kalk Bay and St James, and how to anticipate and what to do in the event of finding the unexpected, as happened recently when a Khoisan skeleton was uncovered at Bay Primary School. See attached for more details.
Tim Hart is a professional archaeologist who holds a Masters Degree in Archaeology from UCT, is a partner in the firm ACO Associates Archaeology and Heritage Specialists, and lives in St James. Copies of the lavishly illustrated 122 page book will be available for sale. Price R375.00.
