I’m looking for an archive of South African photos. Namely the “Independent Newspapers photo archive” from the Durban area. This is the photo archive of the Independent Newspapers group (The Daily News, etc), covering the period from the 1930s to the late 1990s.
I’ve contacted the Durban offices of the parent company, Independent Media, but no joy. I’ve also tried the libraries of the University of Kwazulu-Natal. And am waiting to hear back from the KNZ Museum in Pietermaritzburg. No-one seems to know the whereabouts of the archive.
A few years ago the University of Cape Town acquired the Independent Newspapers photo archive of the Cape province (i.e. photos from The Cape Argus, etc); they have digitised thousands of photos and set up a terrific online archive. But they only have photos from the Cape, not from Kwazulu-Natal.
I'd be very grateful if someone from the community could assist.
