I am in the last stages of a biography of Thomas Baines’ first years at the Cape 1842-1848. There are a number of oil paintings I wish to locate to photograph for this book. They are only known from old photos and correspondence in the papers of Dr Frank Bradlow which are now in UCT Archives.

These are the oil paintings:

  • Stellenbosch, formerly in Baines School in Bulawayo
  • RMS Cambrian in Table Bay, sold by Sotheby's Jhb 1983.5.24, lot 34
  • The Schooner Barry's entering Table Bay, circa 1847 , that belonged for ‘M. Munnik, Rondebosch’
  • Brig Nautilus, and Brig Flibberty, that belonged to ‘D.J.F. Stephen, Jhb 1972’
  • The Justicia [sic] off Cape Town, Captain S. Drake', that belonged to Gilbert Drake and offered for sale at Sotheby's Jhb 2.5.1988, lot 118

Contact details are michael@stevenson.info, thank you
