2. AN UNCOMFORTABLE PARADISE – A HISTORY OF DISPOSSESSION AND SLAVERY IN SIMON’S TOWN
DATE: Monday 29 July 2024 at 7.30 pm
VENUE: St. James Retirement Hotel
SPEAKER: Joline Young
Simon’s Town has been a naval port for nearly 200 years and its establishment necessitated the formation of a town with local vegetable garden as well as numerous farms in the wider district to supply the port. A largely ignored aspect of its history concerns the lives and relationships between the pre-colonial inhabitants, those brought in as “slaves” to till the land, build the houses, work in the homes of “slave-holders”, and the rest of the community.
Joline Young has done extensive research into the records held at the WC Archives for an MA in History at UCT that was awarded in 2015. Her researches and her book shine a new and uncomfortable light on a dark side of the history of the town, nearby farms, and prominent families and personalities, and the lives lived by “slaves”.
3. ON THE ROCKS: A SOCIAL AND ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY OF THE AREA BELOW MAIN ROAD FROM KALK BAY HARBOUR TO WOOLLEYS POOL – PART 2: RESTHAVEN TO WALSOKEN
DATE: Monday 28 October 2024 at 7.30 pm

SPEAKER: Steve Herbert
This narrow strip of land, only one plot deep was largely unbuilt upon for a long time. It once afforded uninterrupted views of the coastline and Bay to travellers along Main Road. Over a period of about 50 years, from the late 1800s to around 1935, fifteen houses were built along here. All of them still remain, some hardly altered but others much changed.
In Part 2 of this talk the properties from Resthaven (179 Main Rd) to Walsoken (205 Main Rd) will be explored. There are many wonderful photos, house plans and family stories to be presented.
