Did you know that Joburg has over 10 million trees? It's hard to believe when you consider that 137 years ago it was a dusty, tree-less patch of veld, with scattered rocky outcrops interspersed with springs and streams. Some of the first trees planted in the 1880s are still growing, and looking radiant.
Here's what German writer and Nobel Laureate Hermann Hesse had to say about trees:
Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.
Let's explore this sentiment and marvel at some of Joburg's oldest trees, while taking in a slice of the city's history, including who planted these trees.
