On an earlier version of The Heritage Portal we tracked the final stages of the Munitoria Building in Pretoria. It was demolished on the 7 July 2013. The Munitoria Building was a landmark modern movement building located on the corner of Madiba and Sisulu Streets Tshwane. As far as we are aware a massive new complex for the City of Tshwane will rise in its place.
The building was demolished despite protests from the Tshwane Building Heritage Association and the Pretoria Institute of Architects (PIA). The PIA questioned the logic of demolishing a sound and historically significant building. It also questioned whether the correct procedures in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act (NHRA) were followed.
