Gale Road Blue Plaque - Heritage Portal - 2012

The road is named after Captain Frederick Gale, manager of Glen Deep Gold Mine. He served with the Railway Pioneer Regiment, who were attacked at Roodewal Station on 7 June 1900. The Regiment hastily erected a barricade with railway tracks and biscuit and meat tins, but were forced to flee, leaving mail bags and rations behind. Captain Gale was one of the first to be fatally wounded.
