Blue Plaque (City of Johannesburg)
In the weeks that followed the June 16 Uprising, protests spread to more schools and locations. On 4 August, the Soweto Students Representative Council (SSRC), organised a workers' stay-away, while students attempted to march from Soweto to John Vorster Police Station. Near the Soweto highway, police opened fire on marching students, and Abiel Lebelo was killed. A prefect at Madibane High School, Abiel Lebelo was an Executive Committee member of the SSRC, launched only two days before his death, on 2 August 1976.
