The Swellendam Heritage Association has managed to persuade Dennis Walters, consulting engineer and author of the book "Bridging the Eastern Cape", to come and talk to our members on Monday evening the 29th of May. Dennis' talk with accompanying slides will revolve around the work of the English civil engineer Joseph Newey (1846–1907), who was one of the multitude of British engineers, craftsmen and artisans who emigrated during the nineteenth century. Having accepted a temporary position as ‘bridge erector’ with the Cape of Good Hope colony government in 1872, Newey stayed on, and retired as chief inspector of public works of the Cape colony 33 years later. During that time he was involved in almost every road-bridge project in the Eastern Cape.

As an experienced speaker with excellent illustrations you are sure to enjoy Dennis' presentation. Dennis will bring some books with him should you be interests in purchasing one. The books sell for R350.00 each, has 280 images, mostly in colour. It is a coffee table type book, A4, landscape.

Date: Monday 29 May.
Time: 18h00 for 18h30.
Place: The Drostdy Schuur.
Speaker: Dennis Walters.
Cost: R50 for members and R70 for visitors. Refreshments: Wine and snacks will be served after the talk.

Please RSVP to  p.bromley05@gmail.com by Friday evening the 26th of May for catering purposes.
