I was born and raised in Johannes Street in Fairlands and to cut a long story short, I wanted to know whether anyone from the community might have any details, pictures, info on “The Vlei” (which is in 3rd Avenue/Johannes Street, Fairlands - click here to view on google maps).
 
As a child, I remember crossing the vlei to get to Northcliff Primary School. It was frightening and left me devastated. When it rained heavily, a man named Solomon used to put me on his back and carry me across the vlei for safety’s sake.

It still amazes me as now, in my senior years, I still look up at the Northcliff Tower from Johannes Street, just as I did as a small child, when there were absolutely no houses around Fairland or Northcliff.
 
I would really appreciate absolutely any information anyone might have on The Vlei and surrounding areas, around the 50s and 60s.
