The talk will be presented by William Martinson and is titled 'Life on the Buffalo River - The Development of East London, a Noteworthy Victorian Town'.

• All are welcome to attend. There will be time for questions.
• Tea cannot be served after the talk but the Evolve Restaurant at the Museum will hopefully be open on the day.
• The BHS's scheduled talk for May 2024 (in association with the Friends of the East London Museum) forms part of the Umtiza Arts Festival. There will therefore be a nominal charge of R10/person to gain entrance to the Museum on the day.

The river port town of East London was born in conflict in 1848, and after many years of limited activity, finally commenced with more substantial development in the 1870's. The talk will provide an introduction to the Victorian style of architecture, will present a brief timeline of the history and development of East London and will show some notable Victorian era buildings and structures in the East London harbour. It will also illustrate selected examples of Victorian style houses, churches, and commercial, municipal and state buildings that were built in East London.

Who is William Martinson?

Architect with Osmond Lange in East London who has worked on a variety of heritage projects, including Heritage Impact Assessments and Heritage Management Guidelines. Chairman of the Border Historical Society. Currently involved in architectural projects including industrial, commercial, health and educational.
