Glenshiel is the last Randlord mansion built by the partnership of Herbert Baker and Frank Fleming, and it’s considered among their most interesting. Originally commissioned by former opera singer Lady Isabel and mining magnate Sir William Dalrymple in 1908, this palatial ‘butterfly wing’ residence was completed in 1910 and quickly became a centre for Joburg’s high society. One of the first homes to have both a swimming pool and a tennis court, Glenshiel was the stage for many parties, glittering soirees, charity balls, and hosted distinguished guests including Princess Alice the Countess of Athlone, granddaughter of Queen Victoria.
Our tour starts at Glenshiel in Woolston Road and continues along Woolston Road to the Ridge School. Along the way, we’ll hear about the popular ‘Lady Dal’ and the other characters who lived along this leafy lane, perched on the edge of Westcliff Ridge.
Don’t miss this walking tour through the house and gardens of one of Johannesburg’s finest mansions. Please wear comfortable walking shows and bring along sunblock, hats and water.
