The National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC) an agency of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has partnered with the Nelson Mandela Capture Site Museum to host an intergenerational dialogue in commemoration of the 60th anniversary since the capture of our former President,  Nelson Mandela.

05 August 1962 was a fateful day for the liberation struggle stalwart, when he disguised as a driver of a car on the old main road which is just 5kms away from Howick but was unfortunately captured and arrested by the apartheid forces following a tip-off (click here to read more). The arrest led to his Rivonia Treason Trial and sentence of 27 years incarceration.

The intergenerational dialogue is a way of raising awareness around the rich legacy of Nelson Mandela and our liberation heritage. The NHC through the Resistance and Liberation Heritage Route programme seeks to involve the public to reflect collaboratively on our history of Resistance and Liberation against the colonial and apartheid rule.

  • Date: Thursday, 25 August 2022
  • Time: 11h00 – 15h00
  • Venue: Nelson Mandela Capture Site

Panellists for the dialogue include;

  • Dr Graham Dominy – NHC Council Member
  • Dr Dumisani Ngcobo- Director: Heritage KZN Sport, Arts and Culture
  • Ms Dorcas Ettang- UKZN Political Science Senior Lecture  and
  • Ms Asanda Luwaca- Chairperson of National Youth Development Agency (NYDA)

Nelson Mandela contributed immensely to the liberation of oppressed South Africans and his legacy should always be recognized to build a better society of the country.
