The University of Cape Town welcomes applications for the MPhil in Conservation of the Built Environment for 2022. The MPhil CBE is housed within the UCT School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics, and is an internationally recognised degree from one of Africa’s top universities.
We cover the theoretical, historical, legal, ethical and technical aspects of heritage research, assessment, and management through the two years of the programme. We offer a good balance of theoretical work, research and writing training, and practical work of the kind you might do as a heritage practitioner or official. The programme includes six taught courses examined through assignments, and an independent research report completed in the second year on a topic of your choice.
The degree equips graduates to work in a wide range of heritage-based careers, or to pursue further study. It’s suitable for built environment professionals such as architects and planners who want to add a heritage specialisation to their existing practice, but we also welcome applicants with diverse professional and academic backgrounds. Past students have included architects, planners, archaeologists, curators, construction managers, teachers, musicians, accountants, tourism experts, heritage officials, policy consultants, activists, and many more!
You need a good Honours degree or equivalent to apply, but UCT also recognises prior learning based on professional experience. If you are not sure if you qualify but are interested in the degree, please feel free to get in touch with us at the contact details below.
The MPhil CBE is set up specifically with busy working professionals and those who do not live in Cape Town in mind. It is offered part-time over two years, via a mixture of regular online seminars and occasional in-person teaching blocks in Cape Town. Most students in the programme work and study at the same time.
