Designed in 1940 for Mr AV Marks by Harold Le Roith, the house is a fine synthesis of International Style aesthetics and the pitched roof idiom. The roof and wide eaves are Highveld adaptions - to throw off water in torrential downpoors, and to protect from harsh sunlight. But it is in the details – the steel balaustrades, slender pilotis, plum-coloured bricks, and the elegant framing of the front door – where Le Roith’s mastery of the Modern Movement is most apparent.
