As a committee member of the Historical Society of Port Elizabeth in South Africa, I have been given a number of documents and photographs of a historical nature by a retired medical doctor, who is a member of our Society and who received these items from various patients. He has asked me to find a home for them and, as they do not pertain to Port Elizabeth or the Eastern Cape Province, I am offering them to anyone who might find them of interest. I am not selling these items but would appreciate to be refunded the cost of the postage and packing, which I can ascertain and quote to any bona fide enquirer. The description of the items is as follows:

1.  Mr Winfield Harrison Scott, U S Diplomatic Service & American Consul in countries all over the world, 1924 – 1950.   This package comprises photocopies of:

• Questionnaire headed ‘The Washington University Foreign Service History Center, Gelman Library, Washington, DC 20052’ – A list of 14 Foreign Service Assignments, with their locations and dates.
• A brief summary of his service with photo in uniform (From the State Dept Register, 1942).
• National Guard, State of District of Columbia, Certificate of Honorable Discharge, dated 1st June 1917.
• US Department of State passport, dated 1945 & 1950.
• Official form of greeting from King George the Sixth to Winfield H Scott on his appointment as Consul at Suva (Fiji).
• Two mounted black & white portrait prints of Scott, mounted on a folded card.

2.  Mrs Liefeldt’s photographs of the visit of the British Royal Family to Natal, 1947 (the doctor believes her husband was a District Commissioner at Eshowe, Zululand – the Liefeldts accompanied the King and Queen on the short train journey to Durban).

• 5 B&W prints approx size 205 x 150 mm, showing the Royal Family with Liefeldt (2), Zulu dancers, Liefeldt with a group of Zulu chiefs; and one print showing Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands exiting a Zulu hut, dated 13 September 1976.
• 4 B&W prints approx size 110 x 150 mm, a Zulu chief approaching a stage on which the Royal family is seated (2), a second chief approaching the same stage, a black man in service uniform at the stage and Mrs Liefeldt with the King.
• 5 smaller B&W prints showing the Royal family driving in an open limosine past a crowd of onlookers (2), more scenes at the stage (2) and Mr & Mrs Liefeldt.
• 3 tiny B&W prints showing the King, the Queen and another scene at the stage.
• A page cut out of a magazine (title cut off) with scenes of Cyprian Dinizulu and Zulu dancers at this event.

3.  Papers of Mrs Irene Wood, artist & journalist

• 3 typed A4 size pages describing Mrs Wood’s life when her husband was appointed Professor of Architecture at the School of Engineering, Giza (Egypt), followed by 6 years in Delhi, South Africa, South West Africa and Australia, detailing mainly her work as an artist.
• A typescript volume entitled “Writings of Mr W W Wood & Mrs Irene Wood”, A4 portrait format, bound in board covers at the head. This comprises ‘Some sidelights on an architectural career’ by Mr William Wood (Rhodes-Harrison, Louw, Hoffe & Partners, 5th February, 1971),1919-1969 (7 pages), followed by a script for a broadcast from Sydney, Australia, of their adventures in India (5 pages); “Kashmir: Trek to Kolahoi” (17 pages); Delhi Diary (Mrs Irene Wood) - a much more detailed account (92 pages).
