Ron Gold's lifelong interest in military history has led him to where he presently finds himself as a specialist South African battlefield guide. An accomplished storyteller and public speaker, he has recently completed a book on the Battle of Spioenkop and, during this period of lockdown, is recording a series of short videos on the Zulu people as well as the South African War.

Not only was this one-day battle, on 24th January 1900, the bloodiest day of the war for both sides, it was also a battle of blunders, characterised by poor planning, even poorer execution, mis-communication, command confusion and, at times, rank stupidity. Despite all this, the battle was, in the end, yet another example of ‘what could have been’.
