Mike Bruton is a retired fish scientist who was born and educated in East London and Grahamstown. He knew the legendary Curator of the East London Museum, Dr Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, since the age of 10 years and stayed in contact with her throughout his career at Rhodes University. He has now retired to Cape Town where he writes popular books on science and scientists while observing platannas in the eco-pool in his back garden.
'Although Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer (1907-2004) is best known for her role in the discovery of the first living coelacanth, she made many other important contributions to science, including pioneering studies on plants, fossils, birds and snails. She was the first bird ringer in South Africa and an important early environmentalist, naturalist and science educator. Although she never passed matric, she received an honorary doctorate from Rhodes University and the Freedom of the City of East London, and many other awards, for her many achievements.'
