Strauss & Co is putting together a small non-selling exhibition of the work of under-appreciated South African modernist sculptor Peter Haden (sometimes incorrectly spelled Hayden). He studied at Wits in the early 1960s and after a stint at Oxford, he opened an art school ('The Academy') in Craighall, Johannesburg, which he ran until he emigrated to Switzerland in 1971. Haden was represented by the Egon Guenther Gallery and had two exhibitions there: the first was a group show with Hannes Harrs, Sydney Kumalo, Ezron Legae and Edoardo Villa, and the second was a two-person exhibition with Cecil Skotnes. There were three short pieces about Haden in Artlook magazine in the 1960s (one an article written by Shirley Eskapa) and a few of his works have appeared on the auction market in recent years. I am trying to find out more about the artist and 'The Academy' and would like to locate further examples of Haden's work and photographs from the era. Please contact me if you have anything to add to the growing story.
